Join composer John Massari as he seeks to re-record his classic synth score for KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE with a full symphony orchestra

Back in 1988 the Chiodo Brothers unleashed upon the world a silly sci-fi horror films that has since become a cult favorite – and deservedly so. The saga of an invasion of space aliens who look like clowns who proceed to terrorize a small town was tons of fun, and it was supported by a terrific synth score by John Massari (RAY BRADBURY THEATER, RETRO PUPPER MASTER, LEECHES, THE CELL 2) that went a long way in energizing the film and making its clown-guised alien invasion effective and stimulating, while also playing ferocious straight man to the film’s comedic tone. Along with Darcie F. Olson’s costume design, Massari’s score was nominated for a Saturn Award by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films.
For some time now, Massari was interested in revisiting the score and giving it the authentic orchestral flavor that the Chiodo’s budget couldn’t afford. Massari has even performed parts of the score with a live orchestra on youtube in recent months – leading him to launch an Indiegogo campaign to fund a special recording session to record the entire KILLER KLOWNS score with a full orchestra. With the aid of punk rock band The Dickies (who sung the film’s title song) and fellow composer Bear McCreary (BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, THE WALKING DEAD, BLACK SAILS, OUTLANDER) who’s offered to play some of his rare musical instruments to give the acoustic KILLER KLOWNS recording some unique sonic flavors.
“My original synthesizers exploded the soundtrack with a kaleidoscope of colors and textures; however, the creative soul and inspiration living in this epic score was born from the heart of classical music,” Massari explained on his Indiegogo page. “It is my desire to re-awaken the heart and soul of this iconic film score, adding a fresh dimension by utilizing the powerful majesty of a full classical orchestra featuring Hollywood’s finest musicians. I invite you to join me personally in this amazing artistic process.”
In addition to supporting the recording, patrons of the Indiegogo campaign at its higher levels of support will be able to attend the recording session in person, or virtually via an online connection. A DVD documentary of the process is also planned.
