Christopher Young Scores A Deadly Tune in Horror Thriller THE PIPER
Christopher Young (HELLRAISER, SPECIES, URBAN LEGEND, THE GRUDGE, THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE, DRAG ME TO HELL, THE EMPTY MAN, SPIDER-MAN 3) has composed the music for THE PIPER, Erlingur Thoroddsen’s (RIFT, CHILD EATER, INTO THE DARK, COLD) horror film about a young composer who, when she is tasked with finishing her late mentor’s concerto, soon discovers that playing the music summons deadly consequences, leading her to uncover the disturbing origins of the melody and an evil that has awakened. THE PIPER stars Julian Sands, Charlotte Hope, Oliver Savell, Kate Nichols, and Aoibhe O’Flanagan. The film premiered at the Screamfest Horror Film Festival last October and has been playing in various countries but hasn’t yet been given a North American release.
The film has so far had mixed (read Jim Morrazini’s balanced review at Voices From The Balcony, here), but Christopher Young’s score has been called out for worthy praise: “The film was released in cinemas in Spain and other parts of Europe in November 2023 but will not be released in most English-speaking territories until later in 2024,” writes music reviewer Jonathan Broxton. “While it has been praised by some horror aficionados for its stylish visuals and opulent atmosphere, mainstream critics were not kind to it… But the music… the music is something else entirely… The score was recorded in Sofia with the Bulgarian Symphony Orchestra and includes not only the full orchestra but also a large adult choir and a children’s choir, as well as some sound design elements by Daniel Wehr.” Read Broxton’s complete, detailed review of Young’s PIPER score here.
