Netflix to Release Toho Anime Series GODZILLA SINGULAR POINT Worldwide in June – Music Score by GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES’ Kan Sawada
The King of the Monsters will be arriving on Netflix with Toho’s new anime series GODZILLA SINGULAR POINT. The new series expands Netflix’s roster of projects tied to the King of the Monsters (in 2017 and 2018, Netflix debuted the trilogy of Japanese animated epic Godzilla films: GODZILLA: PLANET OF THE MONSTERS, GODZILLA: CITY ON THE EDGE OF BATTLE, and GODZILLA: THE PLANET EATER).
The 13-episode SINGULAR POINT animated series, directed by Atsushi Takahashi (DORAEMON: GREAT ADVENTURE IN THE ANTARCTIC KACHI KOCHI, BLUE EXORCIST: THE MOVIE, Assistant Director on Ghibli’s SPIRITED AWAY), “tells a new and original story unlike anything seen in the Godzilla franchise before” (Official synopsis: “Brought together by a mysterious song, a grad student and an engineer lead the fight against an unimaginable force that may spell doom for the world”).
The series features character designs by Kazue Kato of Blue Exorcist as well as a brand new Godzilla design from legendary Ghibli Studios animator Eiji Yamamori (whose past work includes iconic Studio Ghibli films including PRINCESS MONONOKE and SPIRITED AWAY). Anime studio Bones (MY HERO ACADEMIA) in partnership with studio Orange (BEASTARS, LAND OF THE LUSTROUS) will produce the series combining hand-drawn and CG animation styles.
The series debuted Netflix Japan on March 25, 2021; the global release will follow sometime in June.
The musical score for the series is being handled by noted Japanese composer and arranger Kan Sawada, who studied composition and orchestration at Tokyo College of Music and has composed dozens of films, TV, and anime in Japan since 2000. He is known for scoring GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES (2005), DORAEMON series (2006-2014), MOONLIGHT MILE (2007), and DOCTOR-X: SURGEON MICHIKO DAIMON (2012-2019). The series’ opening theme song is performed by BiSH and titled “in case…”, while Polkadot Stingray performs the ending theme song “Aoi. ”
