Roger Neill Scores Hulu’s DARBY AND THE DEAD – Premiers Today
DARBY AND THE DEAD (Originally titled Darby Harper Wants You to Know) is a new supernatural teen comedy film directed by Silas Howard, written by Wenonah Wilms and Becca Greene, and starring Riele Downs as Darby Harper, along with Auliʻi Cravalho, Chosen Jacobs, Asher Angel, Wayne Knight, Derek Luke, and Tony Danza. The film follows Darby Harper, who is granted the ability to see ghosts after suffering a near death experience in her childhood and, as a result, opens a side business counseling local spirits in her spare time.
The film is scored by Roger Neill, an accomplished film composer known for scoring all 13 seasons of KING OF THE HILL, collaborating with Mike Mills on acclaimed films BEGINNERS and 20TH CENTURY WOMEN, and Amazon’s MOZART IN THE JUNGLE. His score for DARBY AND THE DEAD is very electric and unique. Though originally supposed to be a more orchestral score, Roger worked to incorporate a mix of hybrid hip-hop and rock into the film. There is a distinct use of percussion and some found sounds throughout the teen drama that play well into the themes of the film to produce a strong score. DARBY AND THE DEAD premiered on Hulu Dec. 2nd.
