John Williams to provide theme for John Powell-scored HAN SOLO movie

Composer John Powell (HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON, the BOURNE trilogy, X-MEN THE LAST STAND) will still write the music score for SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY, but veteran STAR WARS composer John Williams will return to compose the theme for the latest standalone film.
“The present plan is that I’m writing a theme for Han Solo, and John Powell is going to write the score, which he’ll do brilliantly,” the composer told writer Jon Burlingame.
This will be Williams’ ninth assignment for the STAR WARS franchise, which includes all eight feature films. ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY, the first standalone spin-off feature, was composed by Michael Giacchino (STAR TREK BEYOND, WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES, SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING).
Powell was announced as the composer for SOLO last July, with only a brief statement from Lucasfilm that the movie “will be scored in the style of the original STAR WARS movies but retain Powell’s distinctive voice.”
“His assignment is something I’m very happy about,” Williams commented. “What I will do is offer this to John, and to [director] Ron Howard, and if all parties are happy with it, then I will be happy. … John will complete the score. He will write all the rest of the themes and all of the other material, which I’m going to be very anxious to hear.”
