Junji Ito’s Supernatural Horror UZUMAKI Animated Series On Its Way from Adult Swim – Scored by Colin Stetson
Director Hiroshi Nagahama’s striking new film UZUMAKI, based on supernatural horror manga by legendary author Junji Ito, was announced way back in 2019, and, as of a year ago, delayed with no ETA. A brand-new trailer unveiled today at San Diego Comic-Con indicates that the upcoming series may be more than worth the wait, wrote Meagan Navarro for the Bloody Disgusting website.
“The Uzumaki manga series is made up of three volumes that were first published in 1998. It follows the story of high school student Kirie Goshima, who lives in the cursed town of Kurôzu-cho described as a small fogbound town located on the coast of Japan. The manga received a live-action feature adaption in 2000 (SPIRAL in the US; see IMDB). Most recently, Ito’s work received another anime adaptation in Netflix’s Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre anthology series,” wrote Navarro (see IMDB).
The four-episode series has been scored by Canadian-American composer Colin Stetson, known for his scores to genre projects like THE MENU (2022), TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (2022), COLOR OUT OF SPACE (2019), HEREDITARY (2018) and OUTLAWS & ANGELS (2016).
The animated film by Studio Drive, Studio Akatsuki, features a voice cast including Uki Satake, Shin’ichirô Miki, and Mariya Ise and is scheduled for US distribution by Adult Swim. A release date has not yet been, but with the unveiling of the new trailer from Adult Swim surely suggests that a streaming debut of the animated series is on the horizon.
