Joel P. West Scoring Marvel’s SHANG-CHI

Marvel Studios’ upcoming feature SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS is scheduled for release to theaters on September 3rd. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film stars Simu Liu as (Shang-Chi), Tony Leung (as The Mandarin, confirming that the Mandarin character featured in IRON MAN 3 and portrayed by Ben Kingsley was an imposter), Awkwafina, and Michelle Yeoh. The picture is about the title character who must confront a past he thought he left behind after being drawn into the web of the mysterious Ten Rings organization.

The film introduces the character of Shang-Chi to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He was created by writer Steve Englehart and artist Jim Starlin, first appearing in Special Marvel Edition #15 (cover-dated December 1973), starring in his own solo title until 1983. Shang-Chi is proficient in numerous unarmed and weaponry-based wushu styles, including the use of the gùn, nunchaku, and jian.

The film is scored by Joel P. West, who’s been recording the music at Abbey Road Studios in London during this June. West scored director Cretton’s four previous feature films, the crime biographical dramas JUST MERCY (2019) and THE GLASS CASTLE (2017), and the dramas SHORT TERM 12 (2013) and I AM NOT A HIPSTER (2012).
