Michael Brook Scores Canadian Monster Movie SLASH/BACK
SLASH/BACK is a 2022 Canadian Inuit science fiction film directed by Nyla Innuksuk in her feature debut. Written by Innuksuk and Ryan Cavan (TV-movie SINISTER SWITCH), the film is set in Pangnirtung, Nunavut, a sleepy hamlet nestled in the majestic mountains of Baffin Island in the Arctic Ocean. The movie opens as the village wakes up to a typical summer day, one with 24-hour sunlight. But for Maika and her ragtag friends, the expected casual summer is suddenly not in the cards when they discover an alien invasion threatening their hometown. These teenagers have been underestimated their whole lives but, using makeshift weapons and their horror movie knowledge, they show the aliens you don’t f*** with the girls from Pang.
The film’s score has been composed by Canadian-born composer Michael Brook, who has been scoring films since the early 1990s, and is known for INTO THE WILD (2007), THE FIGHTER (2010), THE VOW (2012) , BROOKLYN (2015), TIGERTAIL (2020), and LAND OF DREAMS (2021).
SLASH/BACK premiered at the 2022 South by Southwest Festival in Texas last March, and the film was shortlisted for the Directors Guild of Canada’s 2022 Jean-Marc Vallée DGC Discovery Award. The film does not yet have a premiere release date.
