Composer Torin Borrowdale Returns to Score LOCKE & KEY Second Season – Soundtrack Available
Premiering on Netflix on February 7, 2020, LOCKE & KEY is an American supernatural horror drama streaming television series developed by Carlton Cuse (LOST, BATES MOTEL), Meredith Averill (THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE), and Aron Eli Coleite (GHOST TAPE, STAR TREK: DISCOVERY, DAYBREAK), based on the comic-book series of the same name by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodríguez. The series stars Darby Stanchfield, Connor Jessup, Emilia Jones, Jackson Robert Scott, Laysla De Oliveira, Petrice Jones, and Griffin Gluck.
LOCKE & KEY is a coming-of-age mystery about love, loss, and the unshakable bonds that define family. The series follows three Locke siblings – Bode, Kinsey, and Tyler – and their mother who move into their ancestral home, Keyhouse, after their father is murdered under mysterious circumstances. They soon discover the house is full of magical keys that have unique powers, awakening a mysterious demon that will stop at nothing to steal them.
One of the most dynamic composers working in film and television today, Torin Borrowdale’s credits include Lionsgate/Hulu’s thriller RUN, starring Sarah Paulson and Kiera Allen, his third collaboration with director Aneesh Chaganty, following the moving Mother’s Day spot for Google, “Seeds,” and the Sony Pictures drama SEARCHING, starring John Cho and Debra Messing, as well as Lionsgate’s horror-thriller THE TOLL, directed by Michael Nader; National Geographic’s two-part documentary WILD YELLOWSTONE, co-composed with Mark Murphy and Rod Morris; D.C. Hamilton’s action thriller THE MIDNIGHT MAN, and the Gino Anthony Pesi-starring thriller THE FARE.
“Bode is really the protagonist at the beginning,” Borrowdale said of Season 1, in a 2020 interview with Rachel Reeves at the Nightmare on Film Street website. “He’s our main introduction to all the keys and he discovers most of them… [His theme is] just a simple tune that’s played on the flute. Because Bode often finds himself in bad situations, it was an easy theme to place into different musical modes. So sometimes it’s more childlike and wondrous. Sometimes it’s a little more dark and sinister… Once things really get going, the music becomes less childlike wonderment and more like, real things are happening in this world.”
Interviewed by Alex Zalben of Decider, Borrowdale described his theme for Dodge, the ghost in the well: “As a villain, she needed this theme… She’s really mean and angry, but she’s also beautiful and seductive, and behind both of those things she’s actually really manipulative. So I used the theme to characterize all that when she’s at her peak. The theme I wrote for her used a solo cello in a low register, on the cello’s lowest string, and it’s just so gritty and dark and also really beautiful down there. The theme is played impossibly fast, and the crescendo is just really beautiful, it’s percussion and large cinematic chords. I tried to capture all those elements into one theme for Dodge, since she’s such an important character.”
Torin Borrowdale’s original score for LOCKE & KEY Season 2 has been released digitally by Maisie Music Publishing, LLC and is available on Amazon, Spotify, and other digital music sources.
